In early 1960s, the Malaysia Water Resources Development Coordinating Committee was formed to review the need both for hydrological research and basic data. The main functions of the committee were to coordinate investigation, research and collection of hydrological data and to advise the government on the best use of available water resources in the country. Subsequently, the committee was reconstituted as a sub committee of Technical Committee on Land Capability Classification of National Development Planning Committee under the Prime Minister’s Department and named as Water Resources Committee. The Water Resources Committee Malaysia, participating in the activities of the International Hydrological Decade (1965-1974). With the success of the International Hydrological Decade, which aimed to find solutions to the specific water resources problem of countries with different geographical development, led to the founding of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) in 1975. With the launching of the IHP at the International level in 1975, the Malaysian National Committee for the IHP was immediate formed in March 1975 with the view too participating actively in the programme known as “Jawatankuasa Kebangsaan bagi IHP Malaysia”. The International Hydrological Programme is known as Malaysia International Hydrological Programme (IHP Malaysia) at national level.

 

FUNCTIONS :   

The main functions of the Committee were to coordinate investigation, research and collection of hydrological data and to advise the Government on the best use of available water resources in the country.

 

ROLE :

To play a leading role in the promotion of and advancement in hydrological sciences in the country and the region.

 

OBJECTIVES :

 

  • To represent Malaysia on all issues related to the programmes of UNESCO-IHP and participate actively in those programmes.
  • To promote and coordinate research programmes on hydrology and water resources in the country and region.
  • To promote and coordinate practices on hydrology and water resources.
  • To promote and coordinate programmes on education, training and public information on hydrology and water resources.
