The Establishment of the Cableway Stations across the Golok River at Rantau Panjang, Malaysia and at Su-Ngai Golok, Thailand is a project under cooperation between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Malaysia (Department of Irrigation and Drainage—DID) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand (Royal Irrigation Department—RID).

This Cableway Stations across Golok River Project were initiated under the cooperation of “The Golok River Mouth Improvement Project” in order to measure flow discharge of Golok river which will lead to better flood forecasting and flood warning of both countries.

Development of the Cableway Stations across the Golok River

The Malaysian side sent the proposal to construct a Malaysian cableway station across the Golok River at Rantau Panjang to the Royal Thailand Consulate General in 1999 to measure flow discharge of Golok River.

Later on, the Thai side considered that it would be more beneficial if the Thai side also has a cableway station. Therefore, two cableway stations on both sides have been proposed under the good cooperation of the two countries.

There were continuous meetings of Joint Evalauation Team (JET), Joint Technical Working Group (JTWG) and Joint Steering Committee (JSC) to discuss the following matters:

a. Revision of detail design drawings to share common structures
-From four towers to two common towers
-From two cable sling sets to one common cable sling set and
b. Selection of appropriate measuring devices which will enable both sides to measure flow separately.

The construction of the two cableway stations has been completed in early 2010. The benefits of the joint cableway stations are as follows ;

a. Sharing common structures which leads to cost saving.
- two towers
- one set of cable sling
- one set of hoist

b. Separating individual structures
- two flow measuring devices
- two remote controls
- two hydrological station buildings
