Cableway Stations across the Golok River
  Mutual Benefits

Project Background Project Implementation Benefits of the Project The Cableway Stations Mutual Benefits

Before this project, at both river sides, gauges have been installed to measure Golok river water levels. Later on, in order to perform better early warning of flood, both countries have set up automatic gauging system and water level data could be transferred to flood control centers at Kelantan, Malaysia and Bang Nara Project, Thailand by tele-metering system.

However, in order to estimate flood volume, river discharge measurement during flood peak is necessary. Thus, cableway stations are needed to measure river flow velocities and flow areas by moving the current meter at different points along the whole cross section of the Golok river over the cable sling connecting between two towers on both river banks. Therefore, this flow discharge measurement could be achieved only by the cooperation from both countries.

With the establishment of these cableway stations, each side could separately measure river flow velocities and cross section areas of Golok river by using common structures of towers, cable sling and hoist. Golok river discharge could be calculated from measured velocities and cross section areas of flow.

River flow measurement and discharge calculation will be carried out periodically ; low flow, average flow and peak flow and when river cross section is significantly changed.

After measurement, relationship between river water level (H) and river discharge (Q) could be established as called “RATING CURVES”. With this relationship of H-Q, water level data, which is continuously and automatically measured by tele-metering, could be used to estimate river flow discharge. Thus, both flood level and volume could be estimated which will lead to better flood forecasting and flood warning in terms of more details and more accuracy.
